The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) has shifted its focus from establishing 100 economic zones to prioritizing the development of five key zones.
BEZA’s Executive Chairman, Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun (Ashik Chowdhury), revealed the decision, citing current realities.
The five prioritized zones are the Moheshkhali Economic Zone, Jamalpur Economic Zone, Bangladesh Special Economic Zone, Shreehatta Economic Zone, and National Special Economic Zone.
Among these, the Moheshkhali Economic Zone holds particular significance. It hosts several mega projects, including power plants, a deep-sea port channel, and terminal facilities. The nation envisions Maheshkhali as a cornerstone for its industrial and infrastructural development.
Ashik Chowdhury outlined plans to provide these zones with water, electricity, gas, and road connectivity within the next 12 to 24 months. The ongoing mega projects in Maheshkhali are expected to accelerate the country’s economic growth.
The prioritization of these zones marks a strategic shift in Bangladesh’s approach to economic zone development, which now focuses on impactful and sustainable progress.
