A young wild elephant, aged approximately 8 to 10 years, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the remote hills of Teknaf, a border upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
Researchers discovered a hilly stream of the Hnila forest beat in Teknaf on Saturday morning (January 18).
Mohammad Monirul Islam, Assistant Forest Conservator of Teknaf, confirmed the incident. “We discovered the deceased elephant in the hilly stream of the Hnila beat,” he stated. The forest buried the body after an initial examination.
The autopsy report will determine the exact cause of death, but preliminary assessments suggest the elephant may have died from a fall.
Local villager Sona Mia, who witnessed the aftermath, said, “Upon hearing the news of the elephant’s death, we visited the site and found the lifeless body lying in the remote forest.”
The incident highlights wildlife’s ongoing challenges in Teknaf’s rugged terrain, where human-animal conflicts and environmental factors often contribute to such tragedies. Authorities are investigating the matter to uncover the reasons behind the elephant’s untimely demise.
