A protest rally was held in Cox’s Bazar on Friday (August 8) in response to the brutal killing of a journalist in Gazipur. The demonstration, marked by outrage and condemnation, took place at Gungachhtala near the old Shaheed Minar in Cox’s Bazar town at 4:30 PM.
The protest drew participation from journalists, political and social activists, and concerned citizens who gathered in solidarity against the attack on press freedom.
Journalist Tanvirul Miraj Ripon opened the rally by stating, “We haven’t come here just to demand justice for this heinous murder. We are here to inform the people and to stand united. We are not alone — we are together. Journalists seek shelter among the people. We dream of a nation and a united society where public solidarity becomes our greatest strength.”
Cox’s Bazar Life reporter Abdu Rashid Manik said, “The government must take responsibility for every murder that occurs in this country. Successive governments in Bangladesh have attempted to silence the media. We demand the right to speak freely and seek justice for all extrajudicial killings.”
Mohammad Omar Faruk, organizer of NCP Cox’s Bazar, added, “The media is one of the fundamental pillars of Bangladesh. Silencing journalists is a violation of human rights. The murder of a journalist in Gazipur is a direct assault on media freedom — we strongly condemn this act.”
Speakers at the rally demanded a transparent and immediate investigation into the killing and called for effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
