In Cox’s Bazar, a district-level public hearing on climate justice, gender equity, ecosystem management, and climate-induced loss and damage recovery was held.
Breaking the Silence, with support from Oxfam in Bangladesh and Australian Aid under the “Blue Economy and Inclusive Development for Climate Justice (BID4CJ)” project, organized the event on Wednesday at the Arunoday School Hall Room.
Jahidul Islam, Director (Planning and Programs) of Breaking the Silence, chaired the hearing. Special guests included Debraj Dey, Head of the Program Management Unit at Oxfam in Bangladesh; Moazzem Hossain, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth Development, Cox’s Bazar; and Hasan Masud, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services, Cox’s Bazar. Mifta Binte Yusuf and Miraj Uddin Talukder, project managers of the BID4CJ project, moderated the session.
Community leaders and youth organization representatives shared the challenges they face due to climate change, including loss of livelihood, displacement, and environmental degradation.
They highlighted urgent issues like rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and environmental destruction caused by the mismanagement of embankments and sluice gates along the Matamuhuri River in Moheshkhali and Chakaria upazilas.
Government and non-government agency representatives discussed ways to improve the delivery of essential services to vulnerable communities.
