During the winter season, the calm presence of spotted doves (tilla ghughu in Bangla) has become a familiar sight in the Pechardwip area along Cox’s Bazar’s Marine Drive.
The gentle birds are often seen moving in small flocks across harvested paddy fields and open land, foraging quietly under the bright winter sun.
Easily identifiable by their brownish-grey bodies, distinctive black-and-white patches on the neck, and long tails, spotted doves primarily feed on seeds and grains.
Their regular presence in rural and coastal agricultural landscapes highlights the area’s healthy biodiversity.
Rayhan, a local youth, said that the arrival of winter brings an increase in spotted doves to the Pechardwip area every year.
Tourists travelling along Marine Drive are also stopping to admire the birds, capturing photographs, and enjoying what many describe as nature’s silent music.
Nature enthusiasts say the free movement of spotted doves indicates that the local environment remains bird-friendly.
They stress that greater awareness is needed to protect birds and their habitats and preserve this tranquil natural beauty.
