Although the effects of the recent low and well-marked low-pressure systems have dissipated, the expansion of the monsoon is expected to bring more rainfall over the coming days in Cox’s Bazar and various parts of the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Some areas may even experience “heavy to very heavy” rainfall during this period.
In its latest weather alert, the Met Office reported that the southwest monsoon has spread across Bangladesh. It is currently active over the eastern part of the country, moderately active elsewhere, and is in a moderate state over the northern Bay of Bengal.
The bulletin further stated that under the influence of the active monsoon, from Sunday morning over the next 24 hours, many areas in the Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and some areas in Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, may experience light to moderate rain with temporary gusty winds and lightning. Some places across the country may also witness moderate to very heavy rainfall.
Assistant Meteorologist Abdul Hannan of the Cox’s Bazar Weather Office confirmed that the district recorded 50 millimeters of rainfall over the past 24 hours (until 3 PM on Sunday). He added that this amount may increase slightly by night.
Although there is no immediate concern of very heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar, Mr. Hannan stated that intermittent rain has been occurring in the area since Saturday afternoon, occasionally intensifying to moderate or heavy showers. Gusty winds and thunderstorms may accompany the rain, he added.
According to meteorological classification, 1–10 mm means light rainfall, where 11–22 mm is moderate, 23–43 mm is moderately heavy, 44–88 mm is heavy, and over 88 mm means very heavy rainfall
