The administration has rescued a rare shark species in Kutubdia upazila, Cox’s Bazar, and fined the buyer in a mobile court.
The shark was recovered on Wednesday evening (January 28) from the Baraghop Steamer Ghat area. Later, a mobile court imposed a fine on the buyer for possessing the protected marine species in violation of the law.
According to officials, an eight-foot-long shark weighing around 100 kilograms was caught earlier in the day in a fishing boat belonging to the Saber Company of Baraghop Amjakhali. Fish trader Nurul Haque later purchased the shark.
Following the recovery, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Sakib Ul Alam fined the buyer Tk 40,000 for killing and trading a rare and endangered species.
Local Forest Department ranger Abdur Razzak said there is no legal provision allowing the killing or harvesting of sharks.
He said the mobile court found the shark and told the party to burn and bury it so it couldn’t be sold. The burial process was underway, he said.
