The Ukhiya upazila administration has imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, around the Inani Chhota Khal Bridge in Jaliapalong union to protect people and property.

The restriction was issued through an order signed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Panna Akter on Thursday.

According to the order, a fire broke out on October 27 when gas emerged from the ground during the installation of a deep tube well at a house near the Inani Chhota Khal Bridge. The gas was released as workers drove a pipe about 1,000 feet underground. Fire service personnel later worked to control the flames.

Considering the possibility of natural gas deposits in the area, a team from Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) visited the site and provided technical advice.

Relevant departments held an emergency meeting on Thursday to address the situation and ensure public safety. The meeting decided to strengthen security and take precautionary measures at and around the site.

Under the administrative order, public entry and movement have been prohibited within an approximately 200-meter radius of the site. The restriction will remain in force until further notice.

Lighting fires, smoking, and using matches or lighters, along with any other activities that could create a fire hazard, have also been prohibited in the area. People have been instructed to stay away from the site and remain in safe locations.

The order warned that legal action would be taken against anyone violating the restrictions.
