Early-season vegetables have begun to arrive at Boro Bazar in Cox’s Bazar, even though winter is still a ways off. Beans, cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, and other winter vegetables are now available, but high early-season prices have left shoppers dissatisfied.
At Boro Bazar, early winter vegetables were displayed at various stalls. Beans sold for Tk 150–200 per kilogram, cauliflower for Tk 60–80 apiece, cabbage for Tk 60–80 apiece, radishes for Tk 50–80 per kilogram, and tomatoes for Tk 160–180 per kilogram.
Buyer Ansarul Karim said winter vegetables had started appearing in the market, but their prices were too high for ordinary consumers.
“It has become difficult for people with limited incomes to buy vegetables at these prices,” he said, expressing hope that prices would fall as supplies increased.
Vegetable seller Hossain said prices were high because supplies remained relatively low at the beginning of the season. He said retailers also had to buy vegetables at higher prices from wholesale markets.
He hoped prices would come down as supplies increased.
Although early winter vegetables have attracted shoppers, high prices are keeping many from buying what they need. Consumers are now waiting for supplies to increase and prices to ease.
