State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam inspected a waste management and waste-to-energy project at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Saturday.
The state minister visited the project at Kutupalong Extension Camp-4 at around 11:30am.
During the visit, he inspected different project activities and spoke with officials and others involved in its implementation.
He was briefed on the collection, sorting, transportation and processing of waste generated at the camp, as well as the initiative to generate electricity from plastic waste.
Project officials said the large population living in the Rohingya camps generates substantial quantities of waste every day, including a significant amount of plastic waste.
They said initiatives were being taken to bring the waste under a planned management system through collection and segregation, while exploring opportunities for recycling and electricity generation.
The state minister discussed the project’s progress and different aspects of its implementation with officials and stressed regular collection, segregation and recycling as part of effective waste management.
After the inspection, Mir Shahe Alam said the government would work to improve conditions in Cox’s Bazar.
He said the initiative to generate electricity from plastic waste, alongside proper waste management, could help protect the environment.
He also stressed coordinated efforts among all stakeholders to implement such projects.
Cox’s Bazar-1 lawmaker Lutfur Rahman Kajal, Jasim Uddin, Local Government Ministry additional secretary Dr Md Monirul Islam, executive engineer Mohammad Nasrullah, project director Abdul Quayyum and Ukhiya upazila BNP president Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, among others, were present during the visit.
