The Teknaf Battalion (2 Border Guard Bangladesh) has celebrated its 77th founding anniversary with much enthusiasm and pride.

Colonel Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed, Sector Commander of Ramu, inaugurated the day’s events with a cake-cutting ceremony at the battalion headquarters on Monday morning. The program was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashiqur Rahman, Commanding Officer of Teknaf Battalion, along with officers, junior commissioned officers, soldiers, and invited guests, according to a press release issued by the battalion.

The release announced the establishment of the Teknaf Battalion at Khagdohar, Mymensingh, on October 27, 1948. Over its 77-year history, the unit has played an invaluable role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and protecting the borders. From the Liberation War to modern border management, the battalion has served as a true “Sentinel of the Frontier.”

During the 1979–80 anti-terror operations, five of its members embraced martyrdom. In 1999, the battalion was awarded the prestigious “Bangladesh Rifles Standard Medal.” Its heroic participation in historic operations such as Dabanal, Punching Tiger, and Purbo Prachir remains a proud part of its legacy.

Since assuming responsibility for the Teknaf region on November 15, 2015, the battalion has been relentlessly engaged in border security, anti-narcotics, and anti-human trafficking operations, upholding honesty, loyalty, dedication, and discipline as its guiding principles.

From October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025, the battalion arrested 179 suspects, seized 2.08803 kilograms of gold, 4.206 kilograms of crystal meth (ICE), and over 5.7 million yaba tablets. It also confiscated weapons, ammunition, and other smuggled goods worth an estimated Tk 218.25 crore.

Notably, Teknaf Battalion is the first and only unit in BGB’s history to establish a state-of-the-art coastal surveillance system, effectively monitoring 30 kilometers of coastline and 23 kilometers of maritime boundary.

As part of its humanitarian initiatives over the past year, the battalion distributed 440 blankets, organized 8 medical camps providing treatment to 1,097 people, and offered financial assistance to around 1,000 vulnerable individuals. It also facilitated the safe repatriation of 34 security personnel amid unrest in Myanmar, rescued 387 abducted victims, and apprehended 87 human traffickers. The Arakan Army detained 124 Bangladeshi fishermen and 18 boats, but BGB’s efforts successfully brought them back home.

Speaking on the occasion, Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Ashiqur Rahman said, “As long as the red-green flag flies, BGB will remain an unbreakable fortress at the southernmost border of Bangladesh. We are committed to sacrificing our lives, if necessary, to protect the sovereignty of our beloved motherland.”

The statement concluded by noting that the Teknaf Battalion has become a symbol of national pride and trust, embodying the ideals of patriotism, professionalism, and selfless service.
