Temperatures in the Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar have dropped sharply, bringing an intense cold spell that is affecting daily life.

The chill has been worsened by cold winds, making the weather feel even harsher for local residents.

Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, said that on Monday temperatures recorded in Teknaf and Bandarban were lower than in many parts of northern Bangladesh—an unusual situation. He noted that the cold is being felt more intensely in rural areas than in urban centres.

He explained that limited sunshine during the day has prevented the ground from warming adequately.

As a result, the “feels-like” temperature has fallen below the actual reading, intensifying the sensation of cold.

According to the Meteorological Department, Cox’s Bazar recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday—the lowest for the district so far this year.

At the same time, cold winds have been blowing at speeds of around 15 to 20 kilometres per hour.

Doctors have advised taking special care of children and elderly people during this period. To avoid cold-related illnesses, they recommend using warm clothing as needed and following medical advice.

The weather office has warned that the cold spell may persist for a few more days in Teknaf and surrounding areas, as the sudden drop in temperature continues to grip the region.
