Border trade at the Teknaf land port has started regaining momentum after remaining largely suspended for a long time.
On Tuesday afternoon, two more timber-laden trawlers from Myanmar arrived at the jetty terminal of the Teknaf land port.
The consignments included 40 tonnes of timber imported by M Kaiser Jewel and 110 tonnes imported by Omar Faruk, owner of Messrs SIS International.
Earlier, on May 1, a 42-tonne timber-carrying boat arrived at the port for the first time after a prolonged break. In total, around 300 tonnes of timber have so far reached Teknaf port through nine boats.
Potatoes have also been exported from Bangladesh in return.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, general manager (accounts) of the Teknaf branch of United Land Port Limited, the operator of the port, said the timber would be unloaded after the necessary formalities were completed.
Relevant stakeholders said border trade had remained nearly halted since April last year due to conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
However, as import and export activities gradually resume on a limited scale, confidence is slowly returning among traders at the Teknaf land port.
