As the year comes to a close, Cox’s Bazar witnessed an overwhelming influx of tourists, which significantly boosted local businesses. Over the past two weeks, hotels, motels, restaurants, and other tourism-related enterprises experienced a notable surge in sales, bookings, and activities.

According to data from the Cox’s Bazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and related stakeholders, approximately 1.6 million tourists visited the beach city in the last 15 days (up to Friday). During this period, business revenues totaled an estimated Tk 1,600 crore.

Abul Kashem Sikder, President of the Cox’s Bazar Hotel-Guest House Owners’ Association, told Cox’s Bazar Life that around 1.6 million tourists have visited the area in the past 15 days.

“This estimate is based on the capacity of residential hotels, motels, and guesthouses in the city. The influx began on December 13 and continued for 15 consecutive days, with peak crowds observed during this period. However, the number of visitors has started to decline slightly since Saturday,” he added.

The Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar said the district administration and law enforcement agencies have maintained heightened vigilance to ensure the safety of tourists.

Cox’s Bazar currently boasts 550 registered accommodation facilities, including hotels, motels, and guesthouses, with a combined capacity to host 120,000 tourists daily. Over the last two weeks, 100,000 tourists stayed in these facilities daily.

Hotel and motel owners noted that such an influx of tourists during the tail end of the winter season is a yearly phenomenon. However, according to local business owners, this year’s crowd appears to surpass previous records.

Residents hope the wave of tourists will continue into the early days of the new year. However, many have emphasized the need for better management and cleanliness in popular tourist spots to ensure a positive experience for visitors and sustainable growth for the industry.
