The Tourist Police have launched a special drive at the Kobita Chattar area of Cox’s Bazar beach, targeting alleged criminal activities that reportedly occur behind makeshift “kitkat” beach chairs hidden among the pine groves—the operation, led by Additional DIG Md. Apel Mahmud, head of the Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police, took office on Monday afternoon.
“We conduct regular drives to ensure tourist safety,” said Additional DIG Mahmud. “Criminals often take shelter behind the trees to engage in drug use and immoral activities. Such behavior tarnishes the image of the beach and puts tourists at serious risk. Incidents like snatching and harassment often arise from these hidden crimes.”
He added, “Cox’s Bazar is an international-level tourist destination, and we will not tolerate activities that threaten its reputation. We are taking strict actions to maintain a tourist-friendly atmosphere.”
According to the Tourist Police, the strategically placed kitkat chairs often served as cover for illegal behavior. These chairs have now been removed, and authorities have intensified monitoring of the area to prevent future incidents.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by local businesses and visiting tourists. Many believe that regular enforcement will help transform Cox’s Bazar into a safer and more appealing destination.
“We want Cox’s Bazar to be beautiful, safe, and truly world-class,” DIG Apel Mahmud affirmed. “Our efforts to achieve that goal will continue.”
