A traditional bamboo fish basket, locally used by fishermen for generations, is still in use at Pechardwip sea beach in Cox’s Bazar.

Fishermen use the handwoven bamboo baskets to temporarily store and carry fish after returning to shore from the sea. The baskets offer a straightforward and effective method for storing the catch before sorting and transporting it to market.

During a recent visit to Pechardwip beach, several such baskets were seen hanging alongside the fishing gear used by local fishermen. Woven from strips of bamboo, the baskets resemble large open-weave containers. Fishermen place their catch in them after returning from the sea and later sort the fish before taking them for sale.

Local elderly fisherman Nur Hossain said fishermen had been using the bamboo baskets to store and carry fish for generations.

“After returning from the sea, it is easy to keep and carry the fish in these baskets. They were once much more widely used among fishermen, but plastic containers have become increasingly common,” he said.

Despite the growing use of modern plastic containers, the traditional bamboo basket remains part of the fishing community’s heritage and rural culture in Pechardwip. It also offers a glimpse into the enduring traditions of Cox’s Bazar’s coastal fishing communities.
