Local boat builders in Pechar Dwip, a village along the Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive, are busy constructing traditional ‘Moon Boats’ to meet growing demand from tourists seeking scenic river and coastal excursions.
During a recent visit to the village, several craftsmen were seen skilfully building the distinctive wooden boats using timber, bamboo and other locally sourced materials. Among them was veteran boat builder Nur Hossain.
“Pechar Dwip has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists,” Nur Hossain said. “Visitors come here throughout the year, and the village’s small cottages remain busy with guests. Many want to explore the sea, while others prefer a peaceful boat trip along the Rezu Khal River. We are building these Moon Boats to meet that demand.”
He said the boats are designed not only for transportation but also for a comfortable, visually appealing sightseeing experience.
“We are paying special attention to both safety and aesthetics. Interest in these boats is growing steadily among visitors,” he added.
Local residents said Pechar Dwip’s unspoilt natural beauty, tranquil surroundings and panoramic views along the Marine Drive continue to attract visitors from across Bangladesh and abroad.
They believe that introducing traditional Moon Boats will further enrich the tourism experience by offering leisure cruises on both the sea and the Rezu Khal River, while also creating new employment opportunities for local people.
Tourism stakeholders said the initiative has the potential to strengthen Pechar Dwip’s reputation as an emerging ecotourism destination and generate positive economic benefits for the surrounding community.
