Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), visited the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, as part of his official trip to Bangladesh.

On Friday (February 28) at around 9 AM, Grandi and his delegation arrived at Balukhali’s Camp 12. He first visited the UNHCR-operated registration center to observe its ongoing activities.

Later, he visited the observation tower at Camp 8 West, where he assessed the overall situation of the refugee settlements before proceeding to Camp 1 East. During his visit, the UNHCR chief engaged with community leaders, including imams and Rohingya guardians, to discuss protection, security, and peace-building initiatives. He also participated in various Camp 4 Extension and Camp 1 West activities.

Grandi was accompanied by Hai Kyung Jun, Director of the UNHCR Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Bangladesh’s Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mizanur Rahman, and officials from various UN agencies and the camp administration.

The delegation departed for Cox’s Bazar in the afternoon following the visit. Later in the evening, Grandi was scheduled to meet with the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar before flying back to Dhaka.

On Thursday (February 27) night, Grandi met Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka.

The UN’s 11th High Commissioner for Refugees arrived in Bangladesh on Wednesday (February 26) for a four-day official visit.
