A woman tourist died after her scarf became entangled in the wheel of a battery-powered e-rickshaw, locally known as a tomtom, in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on the road near Sugandha Point of Cox’s Bazar beach at around 11:30 am.

The deceased was identified as Sima Akter, a second-year Alim student at Fatematuz Zohra Women’s Madrasa in Debidwar, Cumilla. She had come to Cox’s Bazar with relatives for a trip.

Mahbub Alam, a beach worker deployed by the district administration, said Sima’s scarf became caught in the wheel while she was travelling in the e-rickshaw, leaving her critically injured.

She was rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, he said.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said the hospital morgue had kept the body.

He said the process of taking legal action was underway after discussions with the victim’s relatives.
