Reconstruction of the damaged boundary wall of Daroga Bazar Central Crematorium in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, began on Tuesday on the initiative of the upazila administration.

The initiative followed a demand from the crematorium management committee and Durga Temple to rebuild the damaged section.

Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Upazila Parishad administrator Panna Akter inspected the site on Tuesday morning with Ukhiya Upazila BNP president Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Abu Abdullah, local representatives, and community leaders.

Following discussions with the concerned people, the reconstruction work was formally inaugurated and started at the site.

Ratan Kanti De, general secretary of the crematorium and Durga Temple management committee, said the Daroga Bazar Central Crematorium had been used to cremate bodies of members of the Hindu community in Ukhiya for more than 200 years.

“A section of the boundary wall collapsed, and we informed the administration about the matter. We are pleased that the administration has taken the initiative and reconstruction work has started quickly,” he said.

According to the management committee, the crematorium land is recorded in the name of the crematorium under RS and BS Khatian No. 1 as government khas land.
