Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, observed every year on September 10 since 2003. This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Creating Hope Through Action and Compassionate Dialogue.”
According to a survey by the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB), 20,505 people died by suicide in the country in 2023—an average of 56 people every day.
CIPRB is well-known for its lifeguard project on Cox’s Bazar beach, where lifeguards not only prevent drowning deaths but also raise awareness about mental health and safety.
To mark the day, various organizations are hosting rallies, scientific seminars, and photography competitions, sending a powerful message to raise awareness and encourage suicide prevention nationwide.
