The Border Guard Bangladesh on Friday brought back 14 fishermen through the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar after they had been detained by the Arakan Army in Myanmar.

A BGB delegation received the fishermen from the zero line of the Naf River and brought them to the Teknaf jetty. Among those returned were 13 Bangladeshi nationals and one forcibly displaced Myanmar national.

According to BGB sources, the fishermen had unintentionally crossed into Myanmar waters while fishing in different areas of the Bay of Bengal at various times during 2025 and 2026. They were later detained by the Arakan Army and taken to different camps inside Myanmar.

Following the incident, BGB’s Cox’s Bazar region initiated communication and coordination with the Arakan Army on humanitarian grounds. After prolonged discussions and efforts, we made progress in securing the phased return of the detained fishermen.

As part of the process, a BGB delegation on Friday received the 14 fishermen from the Arakan Army at the zero line of the Naf River and brought them back to Bangladesh.

The process of handing them over to their families is underway, while local administration and law enforcement agencies work to verify their identities.

Commanding officer of the Teknaf Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Md Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan said BGB had always been carrying out its responsibilities to ensure the safety of people and property alongside protecting the border.

He said the detained fishermen could be brought back through BGB’s professionalism, sincerity, and effective coordination in dealing with humanitarian issues.

He also said efforts were continuing to ensure the safe return of the remaining detained fishermen.
