For the first time ever, the rare and endangered Nilgai, Asia’s largest antelope species, has been introduced at the Dulahazara Safari Park in Cox’s Bazar. From Tuesday (April 15), visitors can now enjoy viewing a pair of Nilgai in an open and natural setting.

While the name ‘Nilgai’ might conjure up the image of a blue-colored cow for many, it is neither blue nor a cow. Scientifically known as Boselaphus tragocamelus, this animal is a large antelope species once native to the forests of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. However, due to ecological degradation, Nilgai sightings in Bangladesh ceased after the 1940s.

After a gap of nearly 78 years, a female Nilgai was captured in Thakurgaon on September 4, 2018. Two more were found in Naogaon and Patnitala in early 2019, and another in 2021. Experts believe these animals likely strayed across the border from India in search of food.

Currently, the rescued Nilgais are being preserved at the Gazipur Safari Park, where their population reached 11 by January 2025.

Md. Manjurul Alam, the acting officer of Dulahazara Safari Park, said:
“Though the female Nilgai had minor scratches, veterinarians confirmed she was healthy. A male Nilgai was also brought in to accompany her. Visitors will now be able to witness these rare animals roaming freely in a semi-natural environment.”
