Ukhiya, a strategically important sub-district on the border of Cox’s Bazar, hosts one of the region’s busiest weekly betel nut (supari) markets at Sonar Para Bazaar. Among Ukhiya’s 10 government-listed markets, this one stands out for its scale and economic significance.
Every week, thousands gather in a vibrant display of commerce, where betel nuts worth Tk 70 to 80 lakh are traded, according to local sellers. What was once sold for just Tk 2 to 3 per nut five years ago now fetches Tk 6 to 8, reflecting both rising demand and value.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture estimate the total market value of betel nuts produced in Cox’s Bazar to be over Tk 400 crore. The nuts are known for their large size and rich taste, making them highly sought after domestically and internationally.
Locally harvested betel nuts are distributed across major markets in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Sylhet, Kishoreganj, and Bogura. A portion is also exported to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and other international destinations, showcasing the agricultural strength of Cox’s Bazar on the global stage.
