An early warning has been issued for potential landslides in Cox’s Bazar, including the Rohingya camps, in anticipation of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region.

In a special bulletin released on Monday (May 26), the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts that parts of the Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience heavy to very heavy rain — exceeding 88 mm within 24 hours — from 10:00 AM on Wednesday (May 28) and continuing over the next 72 hours.

The bulletin further warns that the anticipated downpour could trigger landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and the three hill districts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

In response to the forecast, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) has confirmed that preparations are already underway in the landslide-prone Rohingya camps of Ukhiya and Teknaf.

Local authorities have urged residents of vulnerable hillside areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety in landslides.
