Due to a prolonged 58-day ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal, many engine-powered fishing boats along the Cox’s Bazar coast remained anchored and inactive. As a result, numerous mechanical components on the boats have become damaged or worn out from disuse. Now, with the ban lifted and preparations underway to return to sea, fishermen are busy getting their vessels ready. While some are purchasing new engine parts, others are opting to repair the old ones with the help of local blacksmiths. A visit to Airport Road in Cox’s Bazar reveals a hive of activity. Blacksmiths are working tirelessly, hammering and welding from dawn till dusk to meet the high demand.
