In memory of those who sacrificed their lives for democracy and justice during the July-August 2024 mass uprising in Cox’s Bazar, a unique, eco-friendly initiative titled “One Martyr, One Tree” was launched.

The program, jointly organized by the district administration and the Forest Department, was held yesterday at the July Monument premises near the Shaibal Tourism Motel on Shahid Smarani Road in the city.

As part of the initiative, four trees were planted in memory of the martyrs of the July uprising: a Krishnachura tree as a symbol of sacrifice for Shahid Wasim Akram of Pekua, an Arjun tree as a symbol of bravery for Shahid Tanvir Siddique of Maheshkhali, a Kadam tree symbolizing the joy of victory for Shahid Ahsan Habib of Chakaria, and a Sonalu tree symbolizing inspiration for Shahid Nurul Amin of Eidgaon.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin attended the event as the chief guest. In his speech, he stated that these trees would serve as a living, green tribute to the July martyrs of Cox’s Bazar, keeping their sacrifice alive for future generations as a guiding light.

The program was attended by Superintendent of Police Saifuddin Shaheen, South Forest Division Officer Nurul Islam, Shahid Tanvir Siddique’s father Badsha Mia, Shahid Wasim’s elder brother Arshad Ali, other family members of the martyrs, and student representatives.

The heartfelt reflections of the martyrs’ family members and wounded freedom fighters created emotional moments during the event. The program concluded with a prayer for the departed souls of the martyrs.
