In an innovative step toward protecting the coastal environment, the Cox’s Bazar district administration, in collaboration with the volunteer organization Bidyanondo Foundation, has launched a new initiative — the “Plastic Exchange Store” and “Plastic Exchange Market” — aimed at reducing plastic waste on Cox’s Bazar sea beach and Saint Martin’s Island.
The program was officially inaugurated today at Sugandha Point on Cox’s Bazar beach. The initiative encourages locals and tourists alike to exchange discarded plastic waste — such as empty bottles, wrappers, and containers — for essential groceries like rice, lentils, oil, sugar, and salt.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin, who was present as the chief guest, said:
“Plastic is one of the biggest enemies of our environment. This exchange initiative will not only help clean up the beach and surrounding areas but also raise vital awareness among the public.”
Also present at the event was Mohammad Jamal Uddin, a board member of Bidyanondo Foundation, along with other local officials and stakeholders.
Organizers announced that the Plastic Exchange Market will run for six months, during which anyone can participate by trading in plastic waste for daily essentials. The effort is expected to make a significant impact in keeping the beach cleaner while inspiring behavioral change regarding plastic use and disposal.
This eco-friendly campaign stands as a model for other tourist destinations grappling with plastic pollution.
