For the first time, the Bangladesh government has initiated the distribution of legal SIM cards among Rohingya refugees — a move expected to help curb crimes facilitated through the use of illegal mobile connections.

The distribution began on Monday (November 10) at the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, where Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mizanur Rahman handed over the first official Teletalk SIM cards to the elected president and executive members of the United Council of Rohang (UCR) on behalf of the RRRC office.

According to RRRC officials, 10,000 SIM cards will be distributed in the first phase across the camps, with the number to be expanded gradually in subsequent phases.

Commissioner Mizanur Rahman declared, “We will completely deactivate all illegal SIM cards currently used by Rohingyas.” Only legally registered SIM cards will be permitted. This is an important step toward maintaining law and order, preventing criminal activities, and curbing unethical practices carried out using unauthorized mobile connections.”

The initiative reflects an important policy shift aimed at ensuring digital inclusion under lawful use, enhancing security, and supporting better communication within the Rohingya community in Bangladesh.
