BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit Cox’s Bazar on January 18 to pay tribute at the grave of Wasim Akram, who was martyred during the July mass uprising.

Aktar Uddin Chowdhury, the publicity secretary of the Cox’s Bazar district BNP, confirmed the matter at around 1:15 am on Monday.

He said that if everything proceeds as planned, Tarique Rahman will visit Pekua upazila to offer prayers at Wasim Akram’s grave.

After a long gap, Tarique Rahman’s visit to Cox’s Bazar has generated widespread enthusiasm among leaders and activists of the district BNP and its affiliated organisations.

Fahimur Rahman, former general secretary of the district Chhatra Dal, said that Tarique Rahman’s return to the country and his visit to Cox’s Bazar are matters of great pride for the BNP family in the district.

Meanwhile, many party leaders and activists have also expressed hope that during his Cox’s Bazar visit, Tarique Rahman will meet the family of Jagir Hossain, a BNP activist who was shot dead in Ukhiya in November 2023.

Mahbub Ahmed Shakil, joint convener of Ukhiya Upazila Chhatra Dal, said that enquiring about the family of martyr Jagir Hossain and his two orphaned children would be a significant gesture for grassroots activists.

Earlier, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Bogura on January 11—his first visit there in 19 years—and Rangpur on January 12, where he will pay tribute at the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed.

It is worth noting that Wasim Akram was martyred on July 16, 2024, during clashes with police amid the anti-discrimination student movement in the Muradpur area of Chattogram. He was a third-year honours student of Chattogram College and a member of the college unit’s Chhatra Dal convening committee.
