The ongoing conflict inside Myanmar has had a direct impact on Bangladesh’s border areas, particularly Teknaf. Law enforcement authorities have detained 53 members of various armed Rohingya groups who had fled across the border.

On Sunday (January 12), police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) carried out a joint operation near the Teknaf border, apprehending the armed individuals. The detainees were subsequently handed over to the Teknaf Police Station.

Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, Commander of BGB’s Ramu Sector, stated, “The 53 detainees are affiliated with different Rohingya armed organizations. Appropriate legal action will be taken against them as per the law.”

Earlier that morning, in the Techi Bridge area of Hwaikyang Union, Teknaf, two people—including a 12-year-old boy named Afnan—were injured by gunfire from across the border. The incident sparked widespread tension in the locality.

On the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway, angry locals blocked and protested, temporarily halting traffic. Law enforcement, under the army’s leadership, eventually brought the situation under control. Local political leaders intervened and lifted the blockade.

The injured child, Afnan, is currently receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, according to family sources.
