An anti-drug debate competition aimed at raising awareness among students was held in Cox’s Bazar, with Cox’s Bazar Government College emerging as champions and Cox’s Bazar Medical College finishing as runners-up.

The competition took place on Sunday (1 February) at 11 am at Shaheed Subhash Hall of the Cox’s Bazar Public Library, organised by the Cox’s Bazar office of the Department of Narcotics Control.

In the first semi-final, Cox’s Bazar Medical College faced Cox’s Bazar International University. Medical College advanced to the final with 101 points, while International University scored 98.75 points. Imrul Ibne Hossain was named the best debater for the round.

The second semi-final saw a closely contested debate between Cox’s Bazar Government College and Cox’s Bazar Hashemia Kamil (Masters) Madrasa. Government College secured victory with 104.5 points against 103.5 points for Hashemia Madrasa. Tahfim Uddin Muntakim was selected as the best debater of this round.

The final featured an intense debate between Cox’s Bazar Medical College and Cox’s Bazar Government College. In the closely fought contest, Government College clinched the championship title. In the final round, Medical College scored 108 points, while Government College scored 106 points. Fahmida Hasan Heba was adjudged the best debater of the final.

Presiding over the programme, Zahid Hossain Molla, additional director of the Chattogram divisional office of the Department of Narcotics Control, said, “We must all rise and become aware in the fight against drugs. Such anti-drug debate competitions play a vital role in keeping the youth away from drugs and strengthening drug control efforts.”

Speakers at the event also included additional superintendent of police Shamim Kabir, district education officer Mohammad Golam Mostafa, deputy director of the Department of Youth Development Moazzem Hossain, and general secretary of the Cox’s Bazar Press Club Momtaz Uddin Bahari.

The judges for the competition were Shahidul Alam of Cox’s Bazar City College, Obaidul Haque of Cox’s Bazar Government College, and former district education officer Nasir Uddin. The debate was moderated by Moin Uddin Rakib.
