The Measles outbreak is increasing at an alarming rate in Cox’s Bazar, with children being infected daily. The highest number of cases has been reported in areas including Moheshkhali, Whykong, Mithachhari in Ramu, and Kalar Dokan, Pahartali, and Rumaliarchhara in the district town.
At present, new patients are being admitted daily to the dedicated measles ward at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. As of Tuesday, a total of 35 children were undergoing treatment there, while three more were admitted to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital. Until March 31, a total of 119 children had been hospitalized with measles at the Sadar Hospital alone. Although separate wards, nursing staff, and necessary equipment have been arranged, doctors are struggling to manage the growing patient load.
Acting Civil Surgeon of Cox’s Bazar, Dr Mohiuddin Mohammad Alamgir, said that measles vaccination is administered in two doses at 9 and 15 months of age, and around 95 per cent of children in the district are under vaccination coverage. He added that sufficient vaccine stock is available and that health authorities are conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns.
Dr Shahidul Alam, assistant registrar at the pediatrics department of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, said, “Separate wards and nursing arrangements have been made for measles patients. All necessary facilities are in place, but the patient load is overwhelming. The number of cases is rising severalfold each day. With collective effort, we hope to manage the situation.”
Doctors said that although measles is a highly contagious disease, it can be prevented and controlled through timely vaccinations, proper nutrition, maintaining hygiene, and seeking prompt treatment when symptoms appear. They particularly urged guardians not to neglect symptoms in children and to take them to hthe ospital without delay.
