A voluntary organisation has submitted a memorandum to a Member of Parliament demanding the establishment of a dumping station to address the growing waste crisis and related social issues in Ukhiya.
The memorandum was submitted on May 2, 2026, by BD Clean Ukhiya to MP Shahjahan Chowdhury. In the document, the organisation stated that it has long been conducting regular cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns across the upazila. However, due to the absence of a proper waste management system, the local environment is now under serious threat.
The memorandum noted that in the absence of a designated dumping station, waste is being disposed of indiscriminately, leading to increased environmental pollution, rising public health risks, and degradation of the area’s aesthetic appeal.
It also highlighted that unplanned waste disposal, poor drainage systems, lack of public awareness, and additional environmental pressure in areas adjacent to Rohingya camps have further worsened the situation.
To address the crisis, the organisation placed a four-point demand, including the immediate establishment of a modern and designated dumping station, adoption of a sustainable waste collection and management plan, strengthening government-led awareness initiatives, and formulation of an integrated environmental management plan through coordination among relevant authorities.
In the memorandum, the organisation expressed hope that the MP would give due importance to the issue and take necessary steps. It also called for effective intervention to transform Ukhiya into a clean, livable, and environmentally sustainable upazila.
