The government has fixed the prices of sacrificial animal hides ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, increasing the rate of salted cowhide by Tk 2 per square foot compared with last year.

This year, the price of salted cowhide in Dhaka has been set at Tk 62 to Tk 67 per square foot, up from last year’s Tk 60 to Tk 65. Outside Dhaka, the price has been fixed at Tk 57 to Tk 62 per square foot, compared with Tk 55 to Tk 60 per square foot last year.

Commerce minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Wednesday announced the price to the journalists following a meeting of the committee formed to ensure proper management of matters related to Eid sacrifices at the secretariat.

The prices of salted goat and sheep hides have also been fixed for both Dhaka and outside Dhaka.

Salted goat hide would be sold at Tk 22 to Tk 25 per square foot, while salted sheep hide has been set at Tk 25 to Tk 30 per square foot.

Speaking at the briefing, commerce minister said that the government would provide salt worth Tk 176 million free of cost for hide preservation.

He said hides would be preserved in every area through traders as well as mosques and madrasas to prevent wastage during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

‘We are working to ensure that no hides are wasted during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. District and upazila administrations would provide training to representatives of mosques and madrasas so that they could properly preserve hides after the sacrifice,’ he added.

The committee on ensuring proper management of Eid sacrifice-related matters held a special meeting earlier, chaired by the commerce minister.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain Kaikobad, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid, and State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam also attended the meeting.
