Cattle traders and farm owners in Cox’s Bazar district are fully preparing for the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha.
Activities are underway to set up temporary cattle markets in different parts of the district, while farms have already started selling sacrificial animals in advance.
Many buyers are also booking their preferred animals early.
According to the district livestock office, a total of 158,163 animals have been prepared for sacrifice at 8,287 farms across Cox’s Bazar district.
The district’s estimated demand for sacrificial animals this year is 134,292, leaving a surplus of 24,771.
Among the prepared animals are 63,139 bulls, 24,283 bullocks, and 16,451 cows, totalling 103,874 heads of cattle.
The stock also includes 6,279 buffaloes, 33,552 goats, 14,463 sheep, and 15 other animals.
Meanwhile, the government has fixed new prices this year to ensure fair prices for sacrificial animal hides.
The information was disclosed by Commerce Adviser Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir after a meeting on the proper management of Eid-ul-Azha-related activities held at the Commerce Ministry on Wednesday.
Under the newly fixed rates, salted cowhide in Dhaka will be sold at Tk 60 to Tk 65 per square foot, while outside Dhaka, the price has been set at Tk 57 to Tk 62 per square foot.
Last year, the price of cowhide outside Dhaka ranged between Tk 55 and Tk 60 per square foot.
The price of salted goatskin has been fixed at Tk 25 to Tk 30 per square foot this year, while the price of sheepskin has been set at Tk 22 to Tk 25.
Last year, goatskin was priced between Tk 22 and Tk 27 per square foot, while sheepskin was sold at Tk 20 to Tk 22.
