Prime Minister Tareque Rahman is likely to visit Cox’s Bazar on a two-day tour on June 13 and 14, according to a tentative itinerary circulated among local authorities.
Preparations are reportedly underway in administrative and political circles in the district ahead of the proposed visit, during which the prime minister is expected to inaugurate development projects, launch a nationwide tree-planting campaign, meet the family of a July movement martyr, and exchange views with local representatives.
According to the provisional schedule, the prime minister is expected to arrive in Cox’s Bazar by air at 8:00 pm on June 13 and stay overnight at the Circuit House.
On June 14, he is scheduled to leave the Circuit House at 10:00 am for PMkhali Union, where he will inaugurate the excavation of the Patli–Machuakhali canal. A brief public gathering is also expected to be held at the site.
He is then expected to visit the safari park at Dulahazara Safari Park, where he will formally launch a nationwide programme to plant 250 million trees and inspect the park facilities.
The itinerary also includes a visit to the grave of Md Wasim of Pekua, described as the first martyr from Cox’s Bazar district during the July 2024 movement. The prime minister is expected to offer prayers and meet members of the martyr’s family.
Later, he is scheduled to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly formed Matamuhuri Upazila and lay its foundation stone. He is also expected to inaugurate the newly established Pekua Municipality and take part in a prayer ceremony there.
Following a lunch and prayer break in Pekua, the prime minister is expected to travel to Chakaria and attend a public rally organised by the municipality.
In the evening, he is scheduled to visit the Marine Drive Road before joining an interaction programme with local civil society representatives at the Cox’s Bazar Cultural Centre (BIAM Foundation Regional Centre).
The tentative schedule indicates that he will depart Cox’s Bazar for Dhaka by air at around 10:00 pm on June 14.
Sources concerned said the district administration, law enforcement agencies and relevant government offices had already begun preparatory work for the proposed visit. They added, however, that the itinerary remains subject to change.
