BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar tomorrow for the first time since taking office as prime minister.

As part of his one-day tour, he will leave Dhaka by helicopter in the morning and first visit Matarbari in Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar. He will then travel to Fatikchhari and Hathazari in Chattogram before attending an organisational meeting with party leaders and activists in Chattogram city in the evening.

During his visit to Maheshkhali on Sunday, the prime minister is scheduled to inspect the Matarbari Deep Sea Port, one of the country’s major mega projects.

He will also attend programmes related to the rehabilitation of flood-affected people in Banshkhali, Fatikchhari and Hathazari, meet Islamic scholars and attend an important organisational meeting.

The local administration and the BNP have made extensive preparations ahead of the prime minister’s visit.

Cox’s Bazar-2 (Moheshkhali-Kutubdia) lawmaker Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid confirmed the visit, saying it would not be a public rally but an official visit.

“This is not a public rally; it is entirely an official visit. The mega projects in Matarbari are not only important for Bangladesh but have the potential to turn the area into an economic hub,” he said.

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan said all necessary administrative preparations for the prime minister’s visit had been completed.

According to the final itinerary prepared by the Prime Minister’s Office, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to reach Maheshkhali at 9:00 am. He will inspect the Matarbari Deep Sea Port, the coal-fired power plant and activities of the Maheshkhali Integrated Development Authority (MIDA).

He will then leave for Chattogram by helicopter at noon. At around 12:00 pm, he is scheduled to attend a programme near Baharchhara sea beach in Banshkhali upazila aimed at rehabilitating people affected by the recent floods.

At the programme, the prime minister will distribute relief materials and hand over keys to new homes to 100 homeless families.

The visit comes as the government continues to focus on major infrastructure and development projects in the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar region, particularly the Matarbari deep-sea port and related development initiatives.
