The Coast Guard has rescued 13 fishermen alive after their fishing boat became stranded in the deep sea due to an engine failure south of Saint Martin’s Island.
Coast Guard media officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the fishermen had gone to sea from Teknaf on September 25 aboard the fishing boat FV Rifat.
After completing fishing operations, the boat was returning to shore at around 4:00 pm on September 28 when its engine broke down, leaving it adrift in the deep sea south of Saint Martin’s.
One of the fishermen called the Coast Guard’s emergency service number 16111 and sought assistance.
Following the call, the Coast Guard immediately launched a rescue operation with the patrol vessel BCGS Syed Nazrul.
The vessel located and rescued the disabled fishing boat along with all 13 fishermen from around 12 nautical miles south of Saint Martin’s Island.
The rescued fishermen received first aid and necessary food.
The Coast Guard said arrangements were underway to hand over the fishermen and the fishing boat to the owners.
Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue such rescue operations to provide emergency assistance at sea.
