The government is set to enhance the use of eco-friendly jute packaging by fully implementing the Mandatory Use of Jute Packaging Act, 2010, with plans to hold discussions with traders by December.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environmental, Forest, and Climate Change Advisor, said that steps will be taken to ensure the widespread use of jute packaging and the ministry of environment will provide policy support to increase the use of jute products.
She made these remarks at a consultation meeting titled “Environmentally-Friendly Jute Sector and Overcoming the Challenges of the Jute Industry,” held at the Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMA) office on September 15 in the capital.
She emphasized the importance of the jute sector in protecting the environment of the country. And urged for prompt measures to address the crisis in the jute industry.
She also stressed the need for joint public-private initiatives to sustain the industry.
Brigadier (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Jute and Textiles and the Ministry of Shipping, said that the first initiative would be to ensure the use of jute packaging for rice, paddy, and wheat sacks.
He also stressed the need for cooperation from everyone to expand the use of jute products.
