The scenic banks of the Bakkhali River in Ramu came alive as five beautifully decorated boats floated across the waters, witnessed by thousands of spectators lining both shores.

A discussion was taking place on stage, recounting the legendary return of Lord Buddha to King Bimbisara’s court in a grand ship after alleviating the suffering of the Bhaishali people.

Probarona Purnima marked this historic event, and for over 250 years, people have celebrated the Kalpo Jahaj Bhasha Festival on the final day of Probarona Purnima to remember the Buddha’s return with decorated ships.

These magnificent boats, crafted from bamboo, cane, and wood and adorned with colorful paper, floated down the river in a scene of unbridled joy.

Children, teens, and young adults danced and sang in groups, playing musical instruments on the boats, while others engaged in Buddhist hymns, chanting praises of Buddha—”Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, let all praise!”

This year, eight elaborately designed boats participated in the festival, each costing around Tk150,000 to construct.
