December 5 marks International Volunteer Day, a global celebration of those who selflessly dedicate their time to helping others. Recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, the day emphasizes the role of volunteerism in achieving sustainable development goals worldwide. On this occasion, five young volunteers from Cox’s Bazar share their inspiring journeys and aspirations.

Nowshava Mokter Siam

Nowshava Mokter Siam began volunteering in 2019, focusing on empowering women entrepreneurs through e-commerce and f-commerce initiatives. During this journey, she founded the Diba Organization, which extends medical and financial aid to disadvantaged women and children.

Her efforts span diverse areas such as disaster relief, women’s health awareness, cyberbullying prevention, vocational training for transgender individuals, and blood donation for pregnant women.

“My mission is to ensure medical care for children and women who can’t afford it, prevent child marriages, empower abused women to become self-reliant, and stand by vulnerable women and children,” Siam shared.

Himel Barua Himu

Himel Barua Himu embarked on his volunteering journey 2018 in Cox’s Bazar, driven by a desire to serve people and inspire youth to initiate societal change. He founded Tarunner Abhijatrik, a youth-driven organization focusing on community service and leadership development.

“Our goal is to nurture leadership skills and awareness among the youth. With a firm determination, I am working towards bringing larger initiatives to contribute to societal growth and welfare,” said Himu.

Sayed Bin Al Hossain Hridoy

Sayed Bin Al Hossain Hridoy began volunteering in 2015 through the National Children’s Task Force (NCTF) and later joined the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society’s Cox’s Bazar unit in 2018. He served as the Health and Services Division Head in the Youth Executive Committee for 2023–24.

“My future ambition is to dedicate myself to humanitarian service and contribute to building a healthy, sustainable society and nation,” Hridoy explained.

Zahedul Islam Parvez

Zahedul Islam Parvez started his journey in 2019 through the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC). He is currently a music volunteer at YASID (Youth Action for Social Inclusion and Development).

“I focus on improving the mental health of underprivileged children through the healing power of music. Driven by a passion for social change, I am committed to enhancing their lives and providing essential support to those deprived of basic needs,” said Zahedul.

Shahrukh Karim

Since 2019, Shahrukh Karim has been volunteering with a vision to bring positive change. He now leads Youth Action for Justice and Development (YAJD), a youth organization dedicated to creating a fair, sustainable, and eco-friendly world.

“In my view, youth are the driving force behind social change. Active youth participation can achieve a sustainable and just world, in my opinion. My vision is to bring real change in society through education, climate action, and social justice,” Shahrukh remarked.

Their stories highlight the transformative power of volunteerism as these young individuals continue to inspire and impact their communities for a better tomorrow.
