Beneath the ocean’s surface thrives a diverse array of creatures. Some are tranquil, while others rule the marine kingdom with their ferocity and speed. These ocean dwellers, with their unique shapes and characteristics, are no less fascinating than their terrestrial counterparts.

Among these creatures, one stands out for its lazy demeanor yet remarkable features — the stingray, locally known as Shapla Pata Machh.

Stingrays, scientifically named Myliobatoidei, are carnivorous marine animals with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. Growing up to 6.5 feet in width and weighing as much as 790 pounds, these creatures are striking in the ocean. Despite their seemingly idle nature, they are adept hunters, using their unique body structure and stealth to catch prey.

Fish markets, particularly the bustling Fishery Ghat, commonly sell stingrays in Cox’s Bazar. Priced between Tk350 and Tk400 per kilogram, they are a sought-after delicacy for locals.

While stingrays may appear lazy as they glide along the ocean floor, their significance in the marine ecosystem and local culture makes them fascinating to explore.
