“Conclave” and “Emilia Perez” led the shortlist of films unveiled Wednesday. They are vying for recognition at Britain’s BAFTA awards next month. The race for Oscar glory in early March is heating up.

“Conclave,” a fictionalized account of high-stakes Holy See horse-trading after the death of a pope, earned 12 BAFTA nominations. At the same time, the surreal narco-thriller musical “Emilia Perez” followed close behind with 11, with both competing for the coveted best film award.
