This year, Cox’s Bazar is witnessing a bumper mustard harvest, bringing new hope to thousands of farmers in the district. Farmers are cultivating mustard on 925 hectares of land, an increase of 400 hectares from the previous year, ensuring a significant yield for the district.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, farmers expect to produce 4–5 maunds of mustard per bigha. Deputy Director Md. Kabir Hossain shared that farmers utilized fallow lands after harvesting Aman paddy, spending only Tk2,000–Tk3,000 per bigha on cultivation. This modest investment could yield an impressive income of up to Tk50,000 per bigha.
High-yield varieties like BARI-9 and BARI-14 dominated this year’s mustard farming expansion.
Only 500 hectares of land were cultivated for mustard in 2022. Encouraged by better yields and profitable returns, more farmers began mustard farming this year, projecting an overall income of around Tk 100 million.
Vibrant yellow mustard blooms now adorn the vast fields of Cox’s Bazar, creating a picturesque scene of prosperity. Favorable weather conditions and government support have fueled this success, sparking new potential in the district’s agricultural sector.
