For the first time in four decades, Bangladesh has ascended to the presidency of this premier, universally representative organ of the world body. Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister and a seasoned diplomat, has officially assumed the presidency to guide the world assembly. This critical assignment—following the historic tenure of former Foreign Minister Humayun Rasheed Choudhury during the 41st session in 1986—stands as a powerful testament to the international community’s growing trust in our nation’s diplomatic maturity.
The President takes the helm of the General Assembly at a perilous juncture when the international order is deeply fractured by escalating geopolitical friction, global economic volatility, and compounding climate crises. Under the timely theme of this session—”Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”—the President has strongly advocated for revitalizing multilateralism. By committing to act as a bridge-builder, the President aims to prioritize institutional reforms within the UN, champion global justice, and facilitate good-faith negotiations to rebuild fractured international consensus.
This leadership role is far more than a symbolic accolade; it offers an unprecedented platform to amplify the voices of the Global South, particularly climate-vulnerable nations and least developed countries. Crucially, the international community expects the President to steer impactful dialogues on artificial intelligence governance, accelerate the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and address humanitarian crises. For Bangladesh, having our statesman as the President provides a strategic vantage point to secure constructive global engagement on critical issues, including the protracted Rohingya crisis.
Ultimately, the elevation of a Bangladeshi representative to the highest office of the General Assembly significantly enhances the country’s geopolitical standing.
