Senior Cox’s Bazar journalist Abdul Kuddus Rana has been named Prothom Alo’s best journalist again, in recognition of his four decades of reporting, investigative work, and commitment to journalism.
Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman handed him the award at a programme held at the Krishibid Institution in the capital on Wednesday, marking the newspaper’s 28th anniversary.
From January to October 2026, Rana published 649 reports in the newspaper’s print and online editions, according to information provided for the award.
Of those, 291 were investigative, field-based, and special reports. At least 12 of his reports appeared on the front page, including seven lead stories. He published 88 reports in October alone.
Over the newspaper’s 28-year journey, he has published more than 12,000 reports.
Rana’s professional journey with Prothom Alo began on the day the newspaper was first published, November 4, 1998, when one of his handwritten reports appeared in its inaugural issue.
The newspaper’s 28th anniversary therefore also marked 28 years of his association with it.
His reporting has covered arms, drugs, terrorism, smuggling, land grabbing, piracy, extortion, corruption and political violence.
He has faced repeated death threats over his investigative work, while protests demanding his execution have been held in Cox’s Bazar and elsewhere in the country.
Prothom Alo’s office has also been attacked and vandalised, according to the account of his career.
In a journalistic career spanning four decades, Rana has also worked for Dainik Azadi, Ajker Kagoj, Bhorer Kagoj and The Daily Star. He began his career at the weekly Swadeshbani in Cox’s Bazar, which is now published as Dainik Cox’s Bazar.
Alongside investigative reporting, he has written on environmental and biodiversity conservation, education, agriculture, fisheries, climate change, sports, civic movements and the struggles of successful entrepreneurs.
