The hilly landscapes of Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar are turning lush green as banana farming spreads across once-barren lands. What was previously unused terrain is now thriving with rows of banana plants, offering farmers both profit and hope.

In areas such as Rajapalong, Holdiapalong, and Palongkhali, farmers are increasingly shifting to banana cultivation due to its low production costs and steady market demand. Many say they can now earn regularly year-round by selling bananas.

“These lands used to be unproductive,” said a local farmer. “Now, banana farming has changed our lives — it’s helping us run our families comfortably.”

According to officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Ukhia, the region’s soil and climate are ideal for banana cultivation. With proper care and pest management, farmers can earn between Tk 50,000 and Tk 70,000 per bigha in profit.

Encouraged by government support and guidance from agricultural officers, many young people are also joining this promising venture. The success of banana farming creates employment opportunities and boosts the local economy.
