Cox’s Bazar, the country’s tourism capital, is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring even in the final days of October. The blazing sun has left both locals and tourists exhausted, prompting many to head to the beach for a splash of relief in the salty waves.

Despite the scorching weather, hundreds of visitors flocked to Laboni Point Beach on Friday afternoon. Some bathed in the sea, others strolled along the golden sands under umbrellas, while a few relaxed on beach chairs, trying to escape the relentless heat.

“I didn’t expect it to be this hot—it feels like my skin is burning,” said Tanvir Hasan, a tourist from Dhaka. “Only the seawater brings a bit of comfort.”

Another visitor, Moyna Akter, shared, “It’s too hot to walk around during the day. We stay indoors until late afternoon when the sea breeze finally makes it bearable to come out.”

According to Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, “Today’s maximum temperature in Cox’s Bazar was around 34°C, with humidity at about 60%. This combination makes it feel even hotter than it actually is.”

He added that light rain is likely on Sunday, which could bring some respite from the heat.

Tourists are now eagerly waiting for that rain. Until then, many say the sea breeze and saltwater remain their only escape from the sweltering weather.
