Defying the roaring waves of the sea, fishermen along the Cox’s Bazar coast continue to venture out to catch fish using makeshift Styrofoam boats.
A visit to the coastal areas revealed that many low-income fishermen craft these boats themselves within a short time and at minimal cost, allowing them to sustain their livelihoods even when they cannot afford conventional fishing trawlers.
“One small or medium-sized trawler can cost several lakhs of taka,” shared a local fisherman. “But a Styrofoam boat can be made at a fraction of that cost, enabling many along the Cox’s Bazar coast to continue fishing and supporting their families.”
These fishermen, with their simple Styrofoam boats, courageously navigate the towering waves that crash along the coast, pushing into deeper waters to fish. Under cloudy skies, in heavy downpours or drizzles, these fishermen continue their work, battling the elements in search of their daily catch.
